Details

Our world is saturated with negative and pessimistic news, and conservation research is often framed from a similarly discouraging perspective. Yet conservation science does not have to be communicated solely through a lens of loss and crisis. In order to safeguard biodiversity on the long term, effective conservation science has to emphasize curiosity, wonder, and connection which are also essential for scientific knowledge (Sherman and Anderson, 2023, Jaric et al. 2025). In this session, we aim to explore how art can serve as a powerful medium to inspire fascination for science and nature. Through illustration, music, dance, sound, and other artistic forms, science can be communicated in ways that engage emotions, spark creativity, and make research accessible to broader audiences. It can thus be a powerful tool to build bridges between academics, practitioners and stakeholder communities. The symposium is envisioned to include participatory forms of art, such as a live sound installation. By integrating artistic expression into scientific outreach, we can cultivate a deeper public appreciation for conservation and the natural world—an appreciation that will ultimately benefit biodiversity.
