Details

Participants need to bring their own laptop for this workshop. Acoustic monitoring is rapidly becoming one of the most effective and accessible tools for studying and conserving wildlife. From birds and bats to amphibians and insects, the sounds animals produce offer a wealth of ecological information that can be collected efficiently and non-invasively. This workshop will introduce participants to the principles, methods, and practical applications of wildlife sound recording for biodiversity surveys and long-term monitoring. Through a combination of expert guidance, demonstrations, and reference to case-studies, participants will learn how to plan and conduct acoustic surveys in the field, choose appropriate recording equipment, and manage and analyse audio data. We will explore tools for species identification and discuss emerging approaches in automated sound analysis and AI-assisted biodiversity assessment. The session will highlight how acoustic data can complement traditional survey methods, strengthen evidence-based conservation planning, and inform policy and management decisions. Emphasis will be placed on the integration of acoustic techniques across disciplines and stakeholder groups — from researchers and conservation practitioners to policymakers and community scientists. Designed to be accessible and practical, this session will equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to incorporate acoustic methods into their own conservation projects, supporting more effective, scalable, and inclusive biodiversity monitoring.
