Economic activities have a huge impact on our living environment and biodiversity. Economic growth rarely goes hand in hand with greater biodiversity. That has to change! In 2025, within NATO, we made a commitment between countries to invest 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) annually on core defense requirements. We also want to explore a similar approach for safeguarding biodiversity within Europe. Can we aim for 1% of Europe's Gross Domestic Product to be spent on safeguarding biodiversity? This concerns the core requirements: safeguarding and managing nature reserves.
