Details

Biodiversity models support nature policy and decision-making by assessing the effects of environmental change and policy and management interventions. The GLOBIO modelling framework, developed and maintained by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), is designed to inform and support policy-makers by quantifying human impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services globally. Over the past years, the GLOBIO modelling framework has been extensively used by PBL for environmental assessments, including those supporting the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Other stakeholders use Mean Species Abundance (MSA), a biodiversity metric derived from GLOBIO, to assess the biodiversity impacts of products, supply chains, and investment portfolios. In this symposium, we will introduce the GLOBIO modelling framework and its components, and present recent model developments from various partners. Specifically, we will host presentations on advancements in several thematic areas: MSA changes in response to both terrestrial and aquatic pressures, species-specific habitat changes, and ecosystem services. Subsequently, we will focus on applications of the modelling framework to assess the biodiversity consequences of policy scenarios, industry footprints, and financial sector investments. We will conclude with an interactive session to identify future development needs and directions.
