Exploring Responsive Materials

Abstract

The fascinating molecular motors and machines and the adaptive behavior of biomaterials that sustain life offer a great source of inspiration to the molecular explorer at the nanoscale. Among the major challenges ahead in the design of complex artificial molecular systems, responsive polymers and soft materials is the control over dynamic properties. Supramolecular systems and adaptive materials ultimately require integration of structure, organization and function of multi-component dynamic molecular assemblies and macromolecular and mesoscopic materials at different hierarchical levels. Furthermore the integration of dynamic covalent and non-covalent bonds in polymer materials enables responsive behavior and recyclability.
In this presentation the focus is on the dynamics of functional macro-molecular and mesoscopic systems as well as triggering and assembly processes based on switches and motors Responsive behavior will also be illustrated in self-assembly of materials with a focus on cooperative action, amplification along multiple length scales and 2D and 3D organized systems. Finally an approach towards bio-based polymers will be presented as well as a prospect toward future dynamic molecular systems and materials.
