HDI introduced rice as a new crop in the Amolatar district and provides input, technical farming services and a guaranteed market. With the income generated from these rice sales, the first group of women have already become landowners and thus achieved economic independence. Hear Agnes tell her story. Early 2013, 100 women entrepreneurs and members of Joyful Women's Organization (JoyWo), a local NGO in Eldoret, Kenya were brought together with UN Women's support to expand their business and finance skills. The women, who are mostly poultry farmers in rural Kenya, plan to put their newfound knowledge to grow their own businesses and to share with other women. "I want to tell women that they can start small and grow," says Irene Rotich, one of the women poultry farmers.

She’s now putting her degree to good use in her business raising and selling chickens.

Women play a fundamental role in Tanzania’s agriculture sector. Yet, their contributions are often overlooked. They face persistent challenges, including unequal access to resources such as capital, labour, expertise and business networks. The EU in Tanzania supports women farmers with several initiatives. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which forms the basis for the European Union’s development cooperation agenda, has one goal (SDG 5) specifically dedicated to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls. Through its past support to the agriculture sector, the EU has ensured gender inequalities in the sector are identified and addressed. Thereby, women are able to continue to contribute to the development of the sector and their own and their families’ well-being.
Rice Weeding in Tanzania: Innovations from the Field, Nov 3, 2014
In Tanzania, the USAID/Feed the Future-funded NAFAKA project is helping farmers adopt new technologies that lead to greater efficiency and increased productivity. NAFAKA trained Evodius Molokozi, a rice farmer in Morogoro Region, on good farming practices. Nafaka is also helping Evodius as he scales up production of his innovation: a low-cost, hand-held rice weeder that greatly reduces labor. Through this video, other farmers in Tanzania are able to replicate the rice weeder and see how good agricultural practices save time and money. In addition to improving rural incomes and food security, these kinds of innovations are particularly helpful for women, who do much of the difficult hand-weeding of rice fields in Tanzania.
